640d (post 2015) and 540i sound much better that either 520d or 530d. 530d is nose heavy whilst 520d is lighter. Spec for spec 520d would corner better than 530d, but 530d is surely faster. Im pretty sure thats the synthetic ASD (Active Sound Design) youre hearing - its a bit marmite but many love the piped-in engine sound.

I am going to make a quick notice about a problem i encountered a few days ago, starting with a check engine light (CEL). The CEL after a quick diagnosis revealed a malfunctioning swirl flap actuator (signal too low). Went to the dealership and they discovered enormous carbon deposits on the intake manifold.

A hard driven 520d consumes almost as much diesel as 530d doing the same job. Looking at the mileage on the 530d you mention, you should be able to get a fully comprehensive BMW warranty on it if it is over 3 years old which might allay your potential reliability concerns.
